Outdoor Lighting Timers in Cincinnati: How to Reset Yours for Shorter Fall Days
Cincinnati sunset moves 90 minutes earlier from August to October. How to reset a landscape lighting timer or photocell for fall.
Sunset in Greater Cincinnati moves roughly 90 minutes earlier between mid-August and mid-October, and most landscape lighting controls do not follow it on their own. If your path lights used to click on at dusk and now sit dark until well after dinner, the fixtures are almost certainly fine. The control at the transformer is running last season’s schedule.
Here is how the three common controls work, how to reset each one for fall, and how to tell a scheduling problem from an actual failure.
Why do my outdoor lights come on at the wrong time in the fall?
Because a fixed-hour timer keeps firing at the same clock time while sunset keeps moving. Cincinnati sunset runs around 8:40 PM in mid-August, around 7:58 PM in mid-September, and around 7:12 PM in mid-October. A timer set to switch on at 8:45 PM in July leaves your property dark for more than an hour and a half of usable evening by Halloween.
The same drift works in reverse in spring, which is why homeowners who never touch the dial end up paying to run a full lighting system for two hours after sunrise in June. Neither case damages the system. Both waste the lighting you paid for.
What is the difference between a photocell, a mechanical timer, and an astronomical timer?
They solve the same problem three different ways, and only one of them tracks the season by itself.
- Photocell (light sensor). A small sensor on or near the transformer reads ambient light and closes the circuit when it gets dark. It self-adjusts all year with zero input from you. Its weakness is placement: a photocell aimed at a streetlight, a garage coach light, or a neighbor’s floodlight reads that glow as daylight and holds your system off.
- Mechanical dial timer. The rotating dial with push-pins found on older transformers. It fires at fixed clock times, drifts a few minutes per month, and loses its place entirely after a power outage. This is the control behind most wrong-time complaints we get in October.
- Digital astronomical timer. You program your ZIP code or latitude once, and the controller calculates local sunset and sunrise every day for the rest of its service life. Set it in April, and it is still correct in December. For Cincinnati properties this is the control worth having.
Many transformers combine a photocell for the on event with a timer for the off event, which is the setup we recommend most often: lights come up at true dusk, then shut down at a chosen hour like 11:00 PM instead of burning until sunrise.
How do I reset a landscape lighting timer for shorter fall days?
Open the transformer door, identify which of the three controls you have, then adjust for the current sunset rather than a memory of summer.
- Confirm the clock first. On a digital timer, check that the current time and AM or PM designation are right. A controller that thinks 7:00 PM is 7:00 AM is the single most common false alarm we find.
- Set the on time about 20 minutes after sunset. In October that lands near 7:30 PM. Landscape lighting reads best once the sky has gone deep blue rather than at the exact moment of sunset.
- Pick an off time you actually want, not sunrise. Most Cincinnati homeowners land between 10:30 PM and midnight. Running fixtures until 6:00 AM adds hours of LED runtime nobody is awake to see.
- If it is a mechanical dial, reseat every pin. Rotate the dial so the arrow matches the true current time, then move the on and off pins. Dials that have been power-cycled several times are usually off by an hour or more.
- If it is an astronomical timer, re-enter the location instead of the hours. Enter the ZIP code, then use the offset feature to shift the on event 20 minutes past calculated sunset. Set it once and it handles the rest of the year.
- Watch it for one full cycle. Stand outside the evening after you change it. A system that comes on at the right minute and shuts down on schedule is done.
What happens to my outdoor lights when daylight saving time ends in November?
Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026, and Cincinnati sunset drops from around 6:40 PM to around 5:39 PM overnight. Photocells and astronomical timers handle the change on their own. Mechanical dial timers do not, and they will be a full hour late from that Sunday until someone opens the transformer.
By the winter solstice on December 21, sunset in Cincinnati is around 5:18 PM. That is more than three hours earlier than the June peak, which means a system left on its summer schedule is dark through the entire early-evening window when the lighting matters most.
Why do only some of my landscape lights come on at the right time?
Partial behavior points at the system, not the schedule. A control problem turns everything on or off together. When one zone lights and another stays dark, or the far end of a run comes up dim several minutes late, the cause is downstream of the timer.
- A separate zone on its own tap or its own timer. Multi-tap transformers often run the front beds and the rear tree lighting on different circuits, and only one control got updated.
- Voltage drop on a long run. Fixtures at the end of an undersized wire run receive less voltage and can lag or run dim. We see this constantly on 12AWG runs that should have been 10AWG.
- A corroded junction. Cincinnati clay holds water against direct-burial cable, and a greened-up connector opens the circuit for everything past it.
- A failed driver in one fixture. Integrated LED fixtures fail individually. One dark fixture in an otherwise correct system is a fixture problem.

What does it cost to fix a failed timer or photocell in Cincinnati?
Timer and photocell work falls at the low end of our repair range. A diagnostic visit with a minor fix runs $350 to $650 flat across Greater Cincinnati, and a control swap usually lands inside that band because the part is inexpensive and the labor is short. Replacing the whole transformer, which is a different job, runs $1,200 to $2,400 including the unit.
A control that has genuinely failed shows a clear symptom: the display is blank, the dial motor does not advance over several hours, or the system stays dark with the manual override switched on. Any of those means the part is done. A system that simply runs on the wrong schedule needs five minutes at the panel, not a new control.
When should I call a Cincinnati outdoor lighting company instead of resetting the timer myself?
Call when the schedule is correct and the behavior still is not. Resetting a timer is homeowner work. Anything requiring a meter on the transformer output is not.
- The manual override runs the lights fine, but no automatic schedule ever fires.
- The transformer hums, gets hot, or trips its breaker when the schedule triggers.
- Zones behave differently from each other after every control has been checked.
- You cannot find a control at all, which usually means the system is switched from an indoor circuit somebody replaced.
- The system was installed by a company that no longer services it.
